Editor’s Note: As 2024 comes to a close, it’s time to reflect on what has been a phenomenal year for pop culture. From experiencing a full-fledged Brat Summer to the hype and anticipation surrounding Wicked, this year reminded us how art continues to shape and reflect our lives, and how we were spoiled with stories and sounds that pushed boundaries, sparked conversations, and left lasting impressions. In this special end-of-the-year roundup, Alexis Zuniga shared her top five picks in movies, TV shows, and music. Let’s celebrate the art, storytelling, and music that made us laugh, cry, and connect this year. Here’s to the hits of 2024 – and all the pop culture magic still to come in 2025.

Movies

  1. The Wild Robot – The Wild Robot was my favorite movie of 2024. What intrigued me the most about this film was the animation style and the vibrancy of the colors. In addition to that, the storyline was beautiful, emotional, and heartwarming. It truly was a work of art.
  2. Wicked – With its rising popularity, Wicked was a must-see in theaters. To say the least, it did not disappoint. The movie was filled with beautiful visuals, fun dancing, and catchy songs like “Defying Gravity”. Knowing that Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande sang the songs live while performing all their stunts made me appreciate the film even more. I definitely can’t wait for Part 2.
  3. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice – After 36 years, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was finally released. As a spooky film fan, I was most excited to watch this movie. I was curious to see if they brought back every actor and actress from the original film. Although I was saddened not to see everyone, I still enjoyed the plot and the new characters.
  4. Inside Out 2 – I felt that Inside Out 2 was not only for children’s entertainment, but also a film that many adults could resonate with on a deeper level. I think the introduction of new emotions, especially anxiety, was important, as these are common experiences in many people’s lives, including my own. The film does a fantastic job of expressing the complexity of emotions.
  5. Venom: The Last Dance – Just like the previous two Venom movies, this film does not fail to bring comical moments. Beyond the humor, it expands on the wide range of uniquely powered symbiotes, culminating in a spectacular and unforgettable final battle.

TV Shows

  1. House of the Dragon, Season 2 – After patiently waiting for two years, House of the Dragon, Season 2 was finally released! With the jaw-dropping ending of Season 1, I knew this season would be filled with even more action and fight scenes. With each episode, I didn’t know what to expect. Which life-changing decision would be made? Would conflict would be resolved? Would I lose a favorite character? The unknown kept me on the edge of my seat, and by the end of each episode, I was left wanting more.
  2. Avatar: The Last Airbender – As a fan of the original animated show and the first live-action film, I felt this show was a success. I do believe this show was better than the live-action movie because it included more comical and playful scenes, similar to the animated version.
  3. Killer Cakes – This mini-TV series was such a fun cake competition show to watch during the spooky season. As a fan of Scooby-Doo and Scream, it was a delight to see that Matthew Lillard was the host. The cool thing about the show was that each team was required to add special effects to their cakes with the guidance of professional horror effects artists. The only downside was that season 1 had only 2 episodes. I hope they continue the series and expand the number of episodes per season.
  4. Fallout – This series shows the perspective of individuals who survived and were raised in a bunker after a nuclear war. It explores the transition of society from the use of currency to the replacement of values and systems. In addition to this, what I found compelling was the inclusion of monsters and mutilated humans caused by radiation. This post-apocalyptic world was chilling yet fascinating.
  5. Bridgerton, Season 3 – What I love most about Bridgerton is how it is set during the Regency era and demonstrates the challenges faced by high society, particularly the pressure of marriage. In season 3, I especially admire Penelope’s transformative journey from a shy and quiet woman to a confident, strong-willed individual pursuing the future she wants and deserves.

Songs

  1. Wildflower by Billie Eilish – Billie Eilish does it again with another great album! She is my favorite female artist, and from her newest album, “Wildflower” is my favorite song. Her vocals are absolutely beautiful and angelic.
  2. Not Like Us by Kendrick Lamar – Kendrick Lamar and Drake’s song battle was the biggest talk of 2024, with an unexpected nine diss tracks released between these artists, leaving fans ranting and raving about who outperformed the other. In my opinion, Kendrick Lamar squashed Drake once he released “Not Like Us”. This song was not only extremely catchy, but also called out Drake for allegations of pedophilia.
  3. Die With A Smile by Lady Gaga & Bruno Mars – Personally, I felt “Die With A Smile’” was one of the best musical collaborations I have heard in a while. I would have never expected to hear this duo, but their vocals blended seamlessly.
  4. Lose Control by Teddy Swims – This year was the first time I’ve heard of Teddy Swims, and I absolutely fell in love with his hit song “Lose Control”. He has such a powerful and soulful voice, and I love how you can hear the emotion in it.
  5. Beautiful Things by Benson Boone – I first heard his songs on Instagram through an ad and fell in love with his voice, so I added his songs to my playlist. I particularly like the power in his voice when he sings the chorus of “Beautiful Things”.
