Statewide Youth Media Projects

The Statewide Network Collaboration Project is an annual deep-dive reporting project by our California Youth Media Network. It is an opportunity for cross-collaboration across communities for high impact storytelling. The projects are produced over multiple months, with participation from dedicated producers and reporters from four youth media hubs.

Not So Golden (2020)

Not So Golden tracks the experiences and challenges facing California’s young adults in housing, education, mental health and employment. It is a collaboration between Boyle Heights Beat, The kNOw Youth Media, We’Ced Youth Media and YR Media. The work was produced by a team of young journalists from Los Angeles, Fresno, Merced and Oakland.


Behind Our Masks (2021)

Behind Our Masks documents young people’s experiences during COVID across communities from online learning to becoming essential workers. It is a collaboration between Boyle Heights Beat, Coachella Unincorporated, The kNOw Youth Media and YR Media. The work was produced by a team of young journalists from Los Angeles, the Eastern Coachella Valley, Fresno and Oakland.


The New Normal (2022)

The New Normal explores how we learn to cope, to survive and regain some semblance of what life used to be. It is a collaboration between Boyle Heights Beat, The kNOw Youth Media, VoiceWaves and YR Media. The work was produced by a team of young journalists from Los Angeles, Fresno, Long Beach and Oakland.
