Statewide Youth Media Projects

The Statewide Network Collaboration Project is an annual deep-dive reporting project by our California Youth Media Network. It is an opportunity for cross-collaboration across communities for high impact storytelling. The projects are produced over multiple months, with participation from dedicated producers and reporters from four youth media hubs.

Our Future (2024)

Gen Z tackles the challenges of adulthood and shines a light on the most pressing issues for young people. It is a collaboration between The kNOw Youth Media, Coachella Unincorporated, Boyle Heights Beat, The Contra Costa Pulse, Tower of Youth, Voices of Monterey Bay, and YR Media. The work was produced by a team of young journalists from Fresno, the Eastern Coachella Valley, Los Angeles, Richmond, Sacramento, Salinas, and Oakland.


You’re Not Alone (2023)

Shining a light on the challenges facing Gen Z and Alpha so they don’t have to suffer in silence. It is a collaboration between The kNOw Youth Media, We’Ced Youth Media, Coachella Unincorporated, Boyle Heights Beat, The Contra Costa Pulse, Voices of Monterey Bay, and YR Media. The work was produced by a team of young journalists from Fresno, Merced, the Eastern Coachella Valley, Los Angeles, Richmond, Salinas, and Oakland.


The New Normal (2022)

The New Normal explores how we learn to cope, to survive and regain some semblance of what life used to be. It is a collaboration between The kNOw Youth Media, VoiceWaves, Boyle Heights Beat, and YR Media. The work was produced by a team of young journalists from Fresno, Long Beach, Los Angeles, and Oakland.


Behind Our Masks (2021)

Behind Our Masks documents young people’s experiences during COVID across communities from online learning to becoming essential workers. It is a collaboration between The kNOw Youth Media, Coachella Unincorporated, Boyle Heights Beat, and YR Media. The work was produced by a team of young journalists from Fresno, the Eastern Coachella Valley, Los Angeles, and Oakland.


Not So Golden (2020)

Not So Golden tracks the experiences and challenges facing California’s young adults in housing, education, mental health and employment.
