Dear Kanye,

What the fuck man. Do you have any idea how long I’ve been a fan? Do you have any idea how much money I’ve spent on your music? Or your clothes? Or your shoes? Or your concerts?  Do you have any idea how many times I’ve had to defend you? How many times I’ve had to tell people “He has a point, maybe George Bush doesn’t care” or “He apologized for the interrupting, everyone makes mistakes when they’re drunk” or “He’s entitled to his own opinion, he can support Trump if he wants to”.

What you said on TMZ though made me question you for the first time in a very very long time. How are you going to say “slavery was a choice”.

How the fuck are you so self aware in your music but in this big of a bubble outside of it.

I honestly don’t remember a time when I didn’t love your music and I don’t think there ever will be. I don’t “Miss the Old Kanye”. No, I miss what you stood for. I miss not having to justify liking you. I miss a time where I could talk about your music without feeling uncomfortable.

Do you have any idea how much I looked up to you? How I have your album cover framed and hanging on my wall? How I’ve written several page long essays about you?

I defended you even when you turned everyone against you with the MAGA hat. But this Ye? I understand where you’re going with “free thought”, but this is just wrong.

I mean literally just incorrect.

Not politically, but just factually. How the hell did you go from rapping what you did on “Never Let Me Down” 14 years ago or “Gorgeous” 8 years ago or hell even “Feedback” 2 years ago to this. It honestly doesn’t make sense.

I don’t know if you’re drugged out, or need therapy, or just misinformed. If you’re one of the first two, please go get help. If you’re just misinformed, please don’t just think free. Think deep.

I’m fine with whatever political party or politician you choose to support.  But please don’t spread blatantly false information about your brothers. Our brothers.

Slavery was not a choice. Or rather it was. Just between slavery and death. Which I’m sure we can agree are two very shitty options. And that Harriet Tubman quote you posted, had you taken about 30 seconds to look deeper into it you would have realized it was fake.

As a fan, I want Kanye to be someone I can look up to, a hero, a role model. I don’t want Kanye to be the musical equivalent to the auntie that will believe anything she reads and is rude to the family, but is always welcomed because she makes the best cookies.

I will always enjoy the art you bring into this world Mr. West. It will always hold a special place in my heart. But I want to listen to your music and not think “Great music but he’s kind of dumb”.

I want to look back on the memories of your music and remember happy times, not times where I felt like I wanted to both hug you and slap the shit out of you.

Fuck, I can’t even feel sad correctly. Whenever I felt down you were always there for me, but now what am I going to do? I love you Kanye, so I’m going to give you some advice.

Either get help or read up on the past and apply that knowledge to your vision.  If you don’t do either of these things then, for both of our sakes, this new album better be the greatest album ever created.

I guess the money did change you, I guess you forgot where you came from.

Enrique Little (he/him/his)
