On Nov. 19, 2025, Evy Singh, a sophomore at Central High School, was named the first-ever Fresno County youth poet laureate. Singh has been working toward this accomplishment since she began writing in the seventh grade, inspired by her family experiences and the educators who encouraged her to express her feelings through poetry as a way to manage her emotions.
“When I discovered poetry through my educators, I found that it was a really nice place to let the words flow, as they needed to be. My feelings didn’t need to be perfect, or anything,” she said.
Being named youth poet laureate gave Singh a sense of leadership and the opportunity to make an impact on others while communicating those feelings. She credits her teachers as the ones who inspired her to channel these emotions into writing and pursue poetry.

Her future goal is to inspire children as her educators inspired her. Singh aspires to become an elementary school teacher, write children’s poetry books and overall become a role model for young people like herself.
Singh’s poetry reflects this dream, with the poem she showcases the most being called “One Day, I’ll Be an Elementary Teacher.”
Singh is also currently writing a children’s book called “JJ’s Greenhouse” that also touches on this theme. The story is based on a classmate who was part of her Future Farmers of America club who found an empty greenhouse at their school and was given permission to plant his own succulents, flowers and more. The book will cover how the student, JJ, was in foster care and found the stability and care in the greenhouse that he felt he hadn’t received from a family.
Singh said she is grateful to receive the youth poet laureate title as she feels that it helps give a voice to everyone around her age and gives them recognition. When asked what message she wishes people receive when reading her poems, she said she wants them to feel seen.
“I hope when people read my poetry they don’t feel alone, or they don’t feel like they have to hide in those emotions, because then it will get bottled up, and you become someone you don’t wish to be. [I hope] that they realize the [impact] they can have on someone or the strength they can give someone to help those ones out,” she said.
