On Jan. 19, hundreds gathered in downtown Fresno for the 42nd annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community March. Community members and young people marched to support King’s legacy of equality and racial equity.

The annual event honors the leadership displayed by King during the civil rights movement and provides a positive space for younger generations to express themselves on current social issues. The parade served as a reminder for attendees not only of the blueprint laid down by King, but also of how his message remains relevant today.

There were crowds of people of various ages, united and holding signs while listening to the speeches as everyone marched together. Music and cheers echoed throughout the town as community members marched together.

“It was powerful to see people from different backgrounds come together and march for what we believe in,” said Scarlett Vang, a member of Youth Leadership Institute’s (yli) REP 559 program. “Seeing youth use their voices felt especially important right now.”

Other youth participants agreed that the event was an inspiration for them in particular.

“The MLK parade was the first parade I ever attended, so I was eager to have the opportunity to go,” said Liseeth Garcia Bautista, also from yli’s REP 559. “Seeing so many people who believed in Dr. King’s dream felt like the ‘beloved community’ he envisioned. There were a lot of young people there, and the atmosphere was inspiring.”

A great number of youth attended the parade and were seen cheering as they held their signs, highlighting how King’s message has been remembered and how his influence continues to impact the next generation of leaders.

The MLK parade illustrated how events can create a space of expression for young people and allow them to stand together on issues of equality. Multiple speakers at the event emphasized the  importance of staying united in these times when America feels divided, which youth participants demonstrated in their attendance.
