SACRAMENTO — According to the statistics, Miguel Bibanco should not have been testifying in the state Capitol last Wednesday afternoon before the Assembly Select Committee on the Status of Boys and Men of Color in California.

As California’s fourth largest school district, Fresno Unified has recently begun revamped efforts to address its high number of school dropouts. The district is using approaches that involve listening to different individuals in the community, including experts in education-related fields and students. Several ideas have been suggested as to the cause of the high dropout rate.

“If you don’t go to college, you will have to come help me farm like this everyday,” my mom explained to me as I wiped to sweat off my face. I always seemed to get that lecture from her every time I complained about going to the farm.
